    Hi,

I just stumbled upon your pattern and I love it, plus it’s the exact size that I need my basket to be! I was just wondering if you can give the exact reference for the macrame cords (brand, material…) as I live in France and the macrame cords I found here look quite different (denser and more rigid), and perhaps I could buy them online to obtain the same size basket. Hope you can help and thanks for this great pattern!

Hi Marina, thanks so much for your comment, it makes me so happy that this pattern fits your needs. About the macrame cords I used for it they actually have no brand. In my country they are usually found in big craft supplies’ stores. They are both 100% nylon but the 4 mm one (the one that is wrapped) is more rigid and dense, more like a rope so the ones you found in France work perfect. The 3 mm cord is a bit lighter, it looks more like a shoelace, and in consequence it’s easier for crocheting. Maybe this one will be harder to find but you can substitute with other kind of nylon cord (this could be twisted nylon cord which is also popular and you can find in different thicknesses) or even cotton yarn, it should be a comfortable thread for you to crochet. Just make sure it has the same width and you will have no trouble making your basket. If you find thinner cords they can also work, just use two or three strands to reach the 3 mm width. The key here is to wrap a strong cord for the basket to have good structure. Hope my reply helps you and that you can get your hands on this project soon. Please let me know if there is other way that I can assist you. Have a great day!!!

Thanks a lot for your kind reply!
I was indeed contemplating using some cotton yarn that would be more like shoelace texture, or even hemp or linen string, but that might be a bit too rough and uncomfortable to work with. Other than that, would you know how many meters of 3 mm dark red cord you used? You included the weight of the skeins, but since I might work with some cord that would be sold per meter, that might help to know that. If not, I will work it out…
Thanks for your help, I have a better idea of the textures to look for now, and some possible strategies ahead of me. Have a great day too!

I’m glad the info helped Marina. If you use cotton yarn it would work and look great. Hemp and linen sound good too as long as you don’t force your hands too much while working. About your question, for every 130 gr. of the 3mm dark red nylon cord there are 84 meters approximately. I also suggest you check your gauge before starting the actual basket, make a small sample with single crochet in tapestry crochet (this can be done back and forth) so you decide the size of your hook to reach the original proportions. I’m sure you will make a great looking basket, I would love to know about the outcome. Have a great new year’s eve, greetings all the way to France!!!

Hi, I wish you a very happy new year, and lots of crochet inspiration! Thank you so much for your help, I think I will follow your advice and try to make a small gauge with some different yarns/laces/strings I have at home before I go and buy something, as I’m going to need a lot and don’t want to get the size and texture wrong! From the research I’ve put into it so far, it would cost me at least 50 euros to make it with macrame cords… so I might try and find some cheap cotton cord and string on a website that sells mason’s tools and materials! I will let you know if I end up finding the right cords and hook size, but it might take me a while to make it as I have a toddler who has a lot of energy ! Warmest wishes to you!
