MAPLE C2C CROCHET HOT PAD

FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL

The third stage in our C2C crochet learning journey, moving forward with a new step and a new project too. Just in time for Fall season, with beautiful colors and texture.

The Maple C2C Crochet Hot Pad is a great project to practice drawing with corner to corner technique, with that fun diagonal dynamic that gives such beautiful pixels to create.

It follows the basics of C2C technique by increasing and decreasing within a simple square but now, with the added feature of color changes between two yarns to display the Maple leaf, which calls out for those Autumn warm tones.

A small size project, to ease the medium skill level of changing from one tone to the other. Only a few rows to reach the widest diagonal to then go back by decreasing one block in each row and shape the cute square.

A free pattern that is worked mainly with double crochets, chains, slip stitches and single crochet, to create every little block that puts all the project together and then making the nice edge. But if you do not have many notions of these basic stitches, you can watch my Basic Stitches back and forth video below, which covers all the essentials for three different stitches, including double and single crochets, if you feel you need to practice first.

A pattern that uses thread weight cotton yarn, for bright colors and nice stitch definition. And another square is made as backing, to get that padded texture that is ideal for hot pads.

SPECIAL STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES
C2C Crochet (Corner to corner)

Crochet technique that is made from small blocks which are worked diagonally. The blocks are commonly made of 3 double crochets and 3 chains (they can also be made with half double crochets). It is worked back and forth, by increasing or decreasing one block in each row, depending on the final shape needed (square, rectangle, triangle).

Single crochet join (Standing single crochet)
Used to add a new yarn in the beginning of a new round, to get a cleaner start. Make a slip ring over the hook, insert the hook in the st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

Invisible join
It is used to get a cleaner end of round. Finish last st of the Rnd, cut the yarn leaving a 4”/10 cm tail and pull the yarn through the final loop. Thread tapestry needle and insert in the first st of the rnd. Then, insert the needle on top of the last st of the rnd, by going through the center and pulling through the WS. Pull to close and fasten off.

This video tutorial for the Maple C2C Crochet Hot Pad covers all steps of the making. Video is in Spanish, but you have the option to see the Closed Caption in the language of your choice, by selecting the settings icon on the video then, select Closed Caption, Automatic Translation and select your language. And you also have all written directions, charts and images (below this same post), to follow every detail step by step.

If you want the formatted, ad free, 11 page PDF document (with written instructions, chart and more than 50 images in photo tutorials) of the Maple C2C Crochet Hot Pad, this is available in my pattern stores (RavelryEtsyLovecrochet) for USD $4.70.

Thread weight yarn with a 2 mm crochet hook was the right combination for me, to get nice little squares and a defined shape, perfect for a detailed leaf. PLEASE NOTE that the video tutorial displays the hot pad made with BROWN and GREEN, while this post focuses on the ORANGE/BROWN combination.
