Many crocheted pieces like bags, backpacks, hats, ask for accessories like cords, to tie up or just decorate. They can be found in craft supply stores in many colorful choices and types, but there are times when it’s just more practical to make them ourselves, especially if we want them to be exactly the same color of the yarn we are using.
That’s what happened to me when making the Hippo Backpack in the bigger version. Holes for the drawstring were obviously wider and I didn’t have any rope that suited the design as I needed. I decided to make my own, with the same yarn I used for the bag. I got a thick and resistant DIY cord (made it 45″/115 cm long), which fits perfectly, easy and fast to make, with single crochets only. You’ve probably seen it around, but if you haven’t, I’m sharing the steps to make yours below.
1. Chain 2.
2. Sc 1 in the second chain from the hook, take a look at the horizontal thread to the right.
3. Twist your work slightly to the left, now that horizontal thread faces front.
4. Insert your hook under that horizontal thread, and make 1 single crochet.
5. When finishing the single crochet, you’ll see two horizontal threads to the right.
6. Twist your work slightly to the left again, now those two horizontal threads face front.
7. Insert your hook under those two horizontal threads, and make 1 single crochet.
8. When finishing the single crochet, you’ll see two horizontal threads to the right again.
9. Keep repeating steps 5 and 6, twisting to the left and then, making 1 single crochet under the two horizontal threads to make the cord grow.
**TIP** To go forward quicker, help yourself with your index finger, to pull both threads to the back and go through with the hook.
Go on until the desired length for the cord, fasten off and weave in all ends to finish.
