FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL
Time for new beginnings and good wishes for 2025. Also, a good time for planning next projects and learning new DIY techniques.
The Fortuna Coin Purse was especially designed for these purposes, to start the new year with renewed energy and to practice color work within a few rounds, with a simple tapestry pattern.
The first free pattern of the year, including back loop single crochets, by wrapping two colors, to play with the yarn shades you have available. One main piece which is pretty easy to complete, but in case you need to practice some tapestry first, you can watch some of my videos to make some small samples.
Like this first video below, that shows tapestry with back loop single crochets, in the round, in CLOSED ROUNDS. PLEASE NOTE that the Fortuna Coin Purse is made in a SPIRAL so, beginning and end of rounds will change a bit.
You can also watch this other tutorial, where I show you how to handle the threads when working with more than two colors at a time. PLEASE NOTE that the Fortuna Coin Purse is made in with BACK LOOP SINGLE CROCHETS so, stitches are different, but it will show you how to handle the color changes.
Easy to follow rounds for the coin purse, with only a few stitches and color changes for a quick make. Including a crochet chart below if you are more of the visual type of crocheter.
STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES
Back loop single crochet
Single crochet, made in back loop of stitches from last row/round. Insert the hook in bl of next st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.
Tapestry Crochet
In this technique, you crochet with one yarn while one or more threads are carried and wrapped in between the stitches. Colors are switched throughout rows/rounds to make a drawing. Depending on the project, you will make one or more foundation rows/rounds with one color only and then move on to the tapestry crochet portion of the project.
Invisible join
It is used to get a cleaner end of round. Finish last st of the Rnd, cut the yarn leaving a 4”/10 cm tail and pull the yarn through the final loop. Thread tapestry needle and insert in the first st of the rnd. Then, insert the needle on top of the last st of the rnd, by going through the center and pulling through the WS. Pull to close and fasten off.
This video tutorial for the Fortuna Coin Purse covers all steps of the making. Video is in Spanish, but you have the option to see the Closed Caption in the language of your choice, by selecting the settings icon on the video then, select Closed Caption, Automatic Translation and select your language. And you also have all written directions, images and chart (below this same post), to follow every detail step by step.
I also used cotton sport weight yarn to get the right proportions for this kind of little bag. In three different shades to get the Turkish eye right. ONLY NOTE THAT THE VIDEO TUTORIAL DISPLAYS THE PURSE MADE WITH BLUE.

FINISHING
JOINING THE ZIPPER TO THE COIN PURSE
Turn the bag inside out on the WS. Take one side of the zipper on the WS and pin to last Rnd of the coin purse. Baste with thread in CC, to keep in place. Open the zipper and rep for the other side. With thread in MC make final seam around the edge of the bag with back stitch. Fasten off. Remove baste stitches. If necessary, make a second seam over the lower edge of the zipper. Turn back the bag on the RS.
TASSELS (Make 2)
Wrap CC2 around the cardboard piece 25 times and cut. Pull one 20 cm long strip under all threads to hold from the top. Cut the opposite end of the threads and tie from the top. Tie and wrap several times, to keep in place. Fold the ends of the strips downwards. Use another 20 cm long strip to tie and shape the top of the tassel. Tie and wrap several times, to keep in place. Weave in the ends of the second long strip in between the fringes. Cut even the tips of the tassel. Insert one small ring on top of the tassel (open and close the ring with pliers if necessary). Rep for the other tassel, with GREEN.
Insert the tassels in the keychain ring. Insert the keychain ring in the zipper slider.
And you completed your Fortuna Coin Purse which is a symbol of protection and good wishes, that you can carry every day with you.
To make as beautiful New Year presents for friends and family too! And to make use of your different yarns at home, for different combinations.
