FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL
Today is the best moment to learn something new! Discover the wonderful world of crochet and create something beautiful for your home or make a pretty gift for a friend. And handmade, just by you. I promise, that once you start crocheting and get the hang of it, it will be hard to stop.
These coasters are super easy, perfect for those beginners who wish to learn from zero or practice basic notions, like working back and forth with single crochets. With simple finishing techniques, to add the cute looking fringes on each end.
This project is part of the online video course Crocheting from Scratch, which you may want to see if you have never held a crochet hook or yarn in your life. Different from my other videos, because this one is divided into lessons, where I carefully go through every step and question that may arise when beginning to crochet.
Complete the course if you want to learn to crochet or select the lessons you’re interested in, by reading the description below the clip in my Youtube channel. Or follow directions and photo tutorial below this post to start directly with the project.
The formatted, ad free PDF pattern is also available for free through Ravelry under the name Newbie Coasters, with written instructions and photo tutorials that will guide you through the making as well.
I keep it simple, with one skein of yarn only, but you could also use scraps, of worsted weight yarn. I think this is the best kind of thread to begin with, not too thin, not too thick. And if it’s cotton, the better, for you to see the structure of stitches and rows clearly. Sometimes, when yarn comes with a little fluff it’s hard to identify what you’re doing.

R2-16: Ch 1, sc 15, turn= 15 sts

FINISHING
Take the paperboard piece and wrap yarn 15 times, with complete rounds over 2.4”/ 6 cm length. Cut over upper edge, to make 15 separate 4.7”/ 12 cm strips of thread, for fringes of one edge of the coaster. Repeat to make another 15 strips, for the other edge.
Fold one 4.7”/ 12 cm strip in half. Insert the hook in one upper edge st, over the RS of last R. Take the loop of the folded yarn and pull through the st, yarn over with both strands of the fringe and pull through the loop on the hook. Pull to tighten. Repeat to place a fringe in every st of the upper edge.
Twist the main piece over the same side and place the other 15 fringes over the lower edge, by inserting the hook in every foundation ch, on the WS. Trim the fringes evenly on both edges, to a 1.2” or 1.4”/ 3 cm or 3.5 cm length. Repeat steps for the fringes for every coaster.
