CAMELLIA BEANIE

FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL

Camellias are a kind of flower, that can actually bloom in Winter, with a lovely set of layered petals. Those features, matched with a chunky and slouchy hat, were the perfect inspiration for the Camellia Beanie design.

A nice and comfortable fit for adults, with a subtle drape on the back. To be made both in the round and back and forth, constructed of two pieces, which will be joined by a seam at the end of the project.

Including double crochet clusters and increases in the body of the hat, to draw that growing flower that blooms from the crown. And back loop single crochets, to make the ribbing band, that will adjust softly to the head. An easy level pattern, because of the repetitive crochet pattern, totally suitable, if you already have basic crochet knowledge.

SPECIAL STITCHES

2 double crochet cluster (2-dc cl): Two double crochets, closed together and made in one same stitch. Yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook, yarn over, insert hook in same st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through the three loops on the hook, ch 1 to close.

3 double crochet cluster (3-dc cl): Three double crochets, closed together and made in one same stitch. Yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook, (yarn over, insert hook in same st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook) twice, yarn over and pull through the four loops on the hook, ch 1 to close.

Back loop single crochet: Single crochet, made in back loop of stitches from last round. Insert the hook in bl of next st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

Cute little bumps to create texture. Once you start, it will be hard to put down, because you will move along so fast, with every round. Chart and video tutorial will be essential for the making, for little, but important details on the beginning and end of rounds, and the finishing with the seam. Additional photos included in this post too, for more step by step still shots if you need.

If you want the formatted, ad free, 9 page PDF document (with written instructions, chart and more than 50 images in photo tutorials) of the Camellia Beanie, this is available in my pattern stores (Ravelry, Etsy, Lovecrochet) for USD $2.50.

Bulky yarn is ideal for the proyect, and practically any color will look great, as long as it’s not a super dark shade. The combination of acrylic and heavier weight, allows that lovely drape for a slouchier, more relaxed feel. Joining technique to complete it, will also help to create that contrast in shapes.
