CROCHET MINI VASE WITH FLOWERS

Flowers are a constant element in crochet, either within garments, accessories and lately in varied and very beautiful yarn bouquets.

The Crochet Mini Vase with Flowers has a nice a thick look, besides the long lasting temporality to embellish your spaces or make cute presents. And it can also be easily replicated for several center pieces, with different elements to use up varied colors, textures and yarn weights.

Another seasonal projects to bring joy into any atmosphere or even to give as single flowers that are equally special.

A suitable project to practice basic crochet stitches such as single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. If you come across any questions about the differences between each stitch, I suggest you to watch my Basic stitches, back and forth video, where I display the making.

SPECIAL STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES

Invisible join: It is used to get a cleaner end of round. Finish last st of the Rnd, cut the yarn leaving a 4”/10 cm tail and pull the yarn through the final loop. Thread tapestry needle and insert in the first st of the rnd. Then, insert the needle on top of the last st of the rnd, by going through the center and pulling through the WS. Pull to close and fasten off.

Back loop single crochet: Single crochet, made in back loop of stitches from last row/round. Insert the hook in bl of next st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

Front loop single crochet: Single crochet, made in front loop of stitches from indicated round. Insert the hook in fl of st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

Single crochet join (Standing single crochet): Used to add a new yarn in the beginning of a new round, to get a cleaner start. Make a slip ring over the hook, insert the hook in the st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

Decrease (with single crochet): Two single crochets closed together, to decrease one stitch. (Insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull through the st) twice, yarn over and pull through the three loops on the hook. One st has been decreased.

Ch-3 Picot: Decorative round looking stitch, made from 3 chains which are closed in the round with a sl st. Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from the hook.

Worsted weight, sport weight and thread weight yarns, all used in one single project, with other materials like the wooden stick and floral tape to make a fast stem.

  • 5 gr/11 yd of sport weight (100% cotton) yarn in GREEN
  • 10 gr/43.7 yd of thread weight (acrylic or cotton) yarn in PURPLE / ORANGE
  • 5 gr/21.9 yd of thread weight (acrylic or cotton) yarn in GREEN
  • 30 gr/26.2 yd of worsted weight (100% cotton) yarn in STRAW
  • 2.5 mm (12) crochet hook
  • 5 mm (H-8) crochet hook

  • When crocheting in the round, in a spiral, with sl st, place a marker in first st of the Rnd.

CROCHET MINI VASE WITH FLOWERS
CENTER
Crocheted in the round, in a spiral, starting from the center. With sport weight yarn in GREEN and 2.5 mm crochet hook make a slip ring.
Rnd 1:
Ch 1, 8 sc inside the ring= 8 sts
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around= 16 sts

Rnd 3: (Bl sc 1, 2 bl sc in next st) rep ( ) 8 times, close with invisible join in the 1st st of the Rnd= 24 sts
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

PETALS’ TOP LAYER
Crocheted back and forth and in the round, starting from one petal. With sport weight yarn in PURPLE/ORANGE and 2.5 mm crochet hook ch 8.
R1 (RS):
(Starting in 4th ch from the hook hdc 1, dc 4, ch 8) rep ( ) 7 times, starting in 4th ch from the hook hdc 1, dc 4= 8 petals
Do not turn, to continue crocheting on the RS

R2 (RS): Ch 1, (3 dc over edge dc from each petal) rep ( ) 8 times= 24 sts

Do not turn, do not fasten off and drop the hook by leaving a long loop. Insert the hook in the fl from one st of Rnd 3 of the center of the flower, take the loop from the petals and pull through the fl of the center. Continue crocheting in the round, by taking the fl of each st from Rnd 3 of the center of the flower and each st from R2 of the petals to join both pieces.
Rnd 3: Sc 24= 24 sts
Sl st in next st.
Fasten off. With beg tail and tapestry needle close the sp between 1st and last petal.
Weave in all ends.

PETALS’ BOTTOM LAYER
Crocheted back and forth and in the round, in a spiral, starting from one petal. With sport weight yarn in PURPLE/ORANGE and 2.5 mm crochet hook ch 8.
R1 (RS):
(Starting in 4th ch from the hook hdc 1, dc 4, ch 8) rep ( ) 11 times, starting in 4th ch from the hook hdc 1, dc 4= 12 petals
Do not turn, to continue crocheting on the RS

R2 (RS): Ch 1, (2 dc over edge dc from each petal) rep ( ) 12 times, turn= 24 sts

Continue crocheting in the round, around the center of the flower, below the top layer of petals, by taking each st from R2 of the petals and the bl of each st from Rnd 3 of the center of the flower to join both pieces.
Rnd 3: Sc 24= 24 sts (close last st of the Rnd with sport weight yarn in GREEN)
Cut PURPLE/ORANGE.
Do not turn, do not fasten off. Continue crocheting in the round, in a spiral, to shape the flower receptacle.
Rnd 4: Sc 24= 24 sts
Sl st in next st.
Rnd 5: (Sc 1, dec 1) rep ( ) 8 times= 16 sts
Rnd 6: (Dec 1) rep ( ) 8 times= 8 sts
Rnd 7-8: Sc 8= 8 sts
Sl st in next st. Fasten off. With beg tail and tapestry needle close the sp between 1st and last petal. Weave in all ends.

TOP SMALL PETALS
Crocheted in the round, in one closed round, starting from one petal. With thread weight yarn in PURPLE/ORANGE and 2.5 mm crochet hook, starting in one st from the center of the petals’ top layer.
Rnd 1:
(Sc join, 1 ch-3 picot) in 1st st, [(sc 1, 1 ch-3 picot) in next st] rep [ ] 23 times= 24 ch-3 petals
Sl st in next st.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

CENTER FILAMENTS
Crocheted in the round, in one closed round, starting from one filament. With thread weight yarn in GREEN and 2.5 mm crochet hook, starting in one fl of one st from Rnd 2 of the center of the flower.
Rnd 1:
(Sc join, 1 ch-3 picot) in 1st st, [(sc 1, 1 ch-3 picot) in next st] rep [ ] 15 times= 16 ch-3 petals
Sl st in next st.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

MINI VASE
Crocheted in the round, in a spiral, starting from the center. With worsted weight yarn in STRAW and 5 mm crochet hook make a slip ring.
Rnd 1:
Ch 1, 8 sc inside the ring= 8 sts
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around= 16 sts
Rnd 3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) rep ( ) 8 times= 24 sts
Rnd 4: Bl sc 24= 24 sts
Rnd 5-7: Sc 24= 24 sts
Rnd 8: (Sc 2, dec 1) rep ( ) 6 times= 18 sts
Rnd 9-10: Sc 18= 18 sts
Rnd 11: (Sc 1, dec 1) rep ( ) 6 times= 12 sts
Rnd 12-16: Sc 12= 12 sts
Rnd 17: Sl st 12, close with invisible join in the 1st sl st of the Rnd= 12 sts
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

FINISHING
Wrap the wooden stick with floral tape. Fill in the flower receptacle, insert the stem and glue to the receptacle to keep in place.

Place one or more flowers inside the vase.
