FLORA KETTLE COZY

FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL

When I started learning to crochet more seriously, I was kind of obsessed with flowers. I just loved the way they looked and how they decorated every project so beautifully. And this design was perfect to add this kind of appliqués for a pop of color and volume.

The Flora Kettle Cozy is cute and practical, to decorate your afternoon tea time. It will also work as a cover for when the kettle is hot and you want to carry it to the kitchen table, because the metal heat will not damage surfaces or your hands.

An easy project with a fast main piece to complete, with in the round and back and forth construction. Then, simple flowers and leaves to make and enjoy adding as the colorful details on top.

A combination of basic stitches such as single crochets and double crochets. And also also some half double crochets and treble crochets here and there to shape the appliqués. Remember you can always refer to my Crocheting from Scratch video below, which covers crochet basics right from the beginning, in case you need to check it first. This way, you can move on with more confidence through more complicated crochet pieces.

Or you may even want to practice with the Oriens Mug Cozy first as well, which is even easier and faster to complete, by using single crochets only. Video is in Spanish, but you have the option to see the Closed Caption in the language of your choice, by selecting the settings icon on the video then, select Closed Caption, Automatic Translation and select your language. And you also have all written directions through my Oriens Mug Cozy post, to follow every detail step by step.

The kettle cozy includes increases and decreases to fit the basic kettle you may have at home. But it can be easily adapted in case your is different in size.

SPECIAL STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES

Invisible decrease (single crochet)
Usually used for amigurumi, where stitches need to be tighter, before adding stuffing.
Insert the hook in the front loop of next stitch, immediately insert the hook in the front loop of next stitch, yarn over and draw through two loops on the hook, yarn over and draw through last two loops on the hook. One stitch has been decreased.

Double crochet 2 stitches together
(Yarn over, insert the hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw through the stitch, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook) twice, yarn over and draw through the three loops on the hook. One stitch has been decreased.

Double crochet join (Standing double crochet)
Used to add a new yarn in the beginning of a new round, to get a cleaner start. Make a slip ring over the hook, yarn over, insert the hook in the st, yarn over, pull through the st, (yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook) twice.

Treble Crochet (UK double treble crochet)
Yarn over twice, insert hook in the next stitch, yarn over, draw through the stitch, (yarn over, draw through two loops on the hook) twice, yarn over and draw through the last two loops on the hook.

Invisible join
It is used to get a cleaner end of round. Finish last st of the rnd, cut the yarn leaving a 4”/10 cm tail and pull the yarn through the loop. With tapestry needle, insert in the first st of the rnd. Then, insert the needle on top of the last st of the rnd, by going through the center and pulling through the WS. Pull to close and fasten off.
