This variation of single crochet is one of my favorites because it can resemble stockinette stitch with two needles but made with your crochet hook instead. And there are different options to complete it, depending on what type of construction you are going for. In all cases, the result is a thicker weave because you will always be working right through the center of the “V” structure from single crochets in last round/row, which will give great texture and resistance for projects like bags, baskets, rugs, etc.
Split single crochet in the round: This is single crochet, made right in the center of stitches of last round, to create a thick fabric. Insert hook right in the center of the “V” of next stitch, yarn over and draw through the “V” of the stitch, yarn over and draw through the two loops on the hook.
*It’s important to crochet loosely, to make it easier for hook to go through the “V” of stitches of last round.

And if you want to practice this stitch through an actual project, you can find the Holly Mini Wreath tutorial, to make your own Holiday decorations and give your spaces a lovely cozy feel.
Split single crochet back and forth: This is single crochet, made right in the center of stitches of last row, to create a thick fabric. Insert hook right in the center of the inverted “V” of next stitch, yarn over and draw through the inverted “V” of the stitch, yarn over and draw through the two loops on the hook. You will notice that texture is different and not as identical to stockinette st, because every time you are turning your work you are looking at the back of stitches form last row, that is why you insert the hook through the inverted “V” and not the regular “V” structure.
*It’s important to crochet loosely, to make it easier for hook to go through the inverted “V” of stitches of last row.

Long split single crochet back and forth: This variation of split single crochet is a mix of the first two, because it does resemble the stockinette stitch more clearly as in the round option but it is made back forth. In one row, you work split single crochet by inserting the hook right in the center of the “V” of every stitch. And then, you work next row with slip stitch on the WS. This allows you to work split single crochet on the RS only, to go through the “V” structure of every stitch.
*It’s important to crochet loosely, to make it easier for hook to go through the inverted “V” of stitches of last row.

You can even find the Filum Bag tutorial for this variation, to make your own handbag, which is so fashionable, yet resistant with that amazing texture.
Split single crochet, with tapestry crochet, in the round: One additional variation for this stitch, in case you are looking to add color to your projects. And this can be achieved by mixing it up with tapestry crochet technique. Definitely to be tried and saved into your new set of crochet abilities, if you want that “knit” look with a colorful twist.
