SYMMETRIA TAPESTRY POUCH

FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL

Tapestry crochet, one of my favorite techniques and with so many fun variations. But quite a long time since I last made the one with double crochet, in closed rounds. Finally did and once again, fell in love with the color and pattern possibilities to create with it, for more upright and straight designs, like this Symmetria tapestry pouch.

Constructed of one main seamless piece, with a zippered lining, to give it more structure and resistance to the weaving. And a short handle to carry around the wrist. With a nice size to fit in several gadgets, a wide wallet and some other basics.

Including basic stitches such as single and double crochet, worked in the round, to put the focus on the tapestry crochet pattern, which is repetitive, but that does need a bit of attention at first, to get the shapes right. But that’s why I’m including the detailed written instructions for every round and a chart for you to ease into it.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Tapestry Crochet: In this technique, you crochet with one yarn while one or more threads are carried and wrapped in between the stitches. Colors are switched throughout rows/rounds to make a drawing. Depending on the project, you will make one or more foundation rows/rounds with one color only and then move on to the tapestry crochet portion of the project.

Back loop slip stitch: Slip stitch, made in back loop of stitches from last round. Insert the hook in back loop of next stitch, yarn over, pull through the stitch and loop on the hook.

Tapestry crochet for most of the project, to make the color changes and the symmetric drawing. If you’ve never tried tapestry, maybe you want to try practicing with one of my other tutorials first, to get the hang of carrying a second yarn. Also, to differentiate between one variation or other, working in the round, or a spiral and looking at the different results in shapes.

So, you’ve already seen what makes this project a nice opportunity to diversify your skills. I’ve made the video tutorial for you, including all steps, from carrying the contrasting thread, making color changes and all the way to sewing the lining and zipper. And find the detailed written instructions, chart and additional photos of the process below.

If you want the formatted, ad free, 7 page PDF document (with written instructions, chart and more than 40 images in photo tutorials) of the Symmetria tapestry pouch, this is available in my pattern stores (Ravelry, Etsy, Lovecrochet) for USD $2.50.

Fabric for lining and a zipper are needed to give the best finishing to the pouch. And cotton yarn, in fingering weight was my choice for the crochet work, to give stitches a detailed look. Additional finishing supplies, like regular sewing thread, sewing needle, pins and a square ruler are required as well, to help in the process. Complete steps for adding the lining and zipper come with the pattern.

FINISHING
LINING
Fold the fabric for lining in half, with RS together and press. Lay the crochet pouch over the fabric, lining up Rnd 1 of bottom with the folded edge of the lining. Draw small marks for width and length of the cover, over the fabric.

Remove the bag and draw the complete outline, by using the square ruler.

Pin the fabric to keep in place and cut out the lining, by adding a 1”/ 2.5 cm allowance at the top edge and a 0.6”/ 1.5 cm allowance to the sides. Machine sew the side seams only. Press the 1”/2.5 cm top allowance all around the edge of the lining, to the WS and press. Cut out notches over the four corners of the lining.

Press the side allowances to the WS. Baste with thread in MC all around top edge. Take one side of the zipper on the RS, pin and baste with thread in MC, to one side of the lining, on the WS. Open the zipper and rep for the other side.

Finally, machine or hand sew the zipper to the lining, with thread in CC. Remove baste stitches. Place the lining inside the pouch, lining up side seams and bottom. Then, pin from all around the bag opening. Hand sew the top edge of the crochet work to the zipper, with thread in CC.

JOINING THE HANDLE TO THE POUCH

With tapestry needle, sew 1.2”/ 3 cm of each end of the handle to last 3 Rnds of both sides of bag, over the end where zipper opens.
