FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL
Winter season is always a very creative and fun time to take advantage of our crochet skills. The cold weather and Christmas festivities ahead become the main inspirations for new projects.

It’s been a while since I made the Oriens Mug Cozy and personally, I have using my own quite a lot, because it is a practical and cute home accessory. So, I decided I wanted to make the Christmas themed version, by adding a few easy changes.
Keeping it easy skill level, with the same in the round and back and forth construction, by making last rows with chenille yarn for texture and different finishing steps.
A suitable project for beginners, if you have little experience with the crochet hook. But in case you have never worked with crochet before and need a little practice, I suggest you watch my video Crochet from scratch first, where I show you the basics.
You can also take a look at the original Oriens Mug Cozy project which includes an eyelet, if you have some beautiful buttons at home that you want to use. Make sure to check the dedicated blog post and video tutorial, if you need more step by step photos or a longer video, for a more extensive reference on the making.
SPECIAL STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES
Invisible join
It is used to get a cleaner end of round. Finish last st of the Rnd, cut the yarn leaving a 4”/10 cm tail and pull the yarn through the final loop. Thread tapestry needle and insert in the first st of the rnd. Then, insert the needle on top of the last st of the rnd, by going through the center and pulling through the WS. Pull to close and fasten off.
All essential steps are covered in the Oriens Mug Cozy – Christmas Version Video Tutorial. Video is in Spanish, but you have the option to see the Closed Caption in the language of your choice, by selecting the settings icon on the video then, select Closed Caption, Automatic Translation and select your language. And you also have the round by round directions (below this same post), to follow every detail step by step.
For this Santa-like look, I used both acrylic and cotton sport weight yarns for the main body of the mug cover, then some chenille DK weight yarn for the puffy look on the edge. But you could really use any kind of yarn you have, as long as it is close to sport weight, you will get a similar size and fit for medium size mugs. With a pair of snaps this time, for the flap to be easily opened.
