TRECCIA MESSY BUN HAT

FREE PATTERN WITH VIDEO TUTORIAL

Cables…they’ve always seemed to me such a pretty design element. I hadn’t made many patterns with them, because you know, sometimes I get too focused on my love for color work. And it can become hard to decide between several ideas, but eventually, they all see the light.

But not missing color combinations at all this time. Textured stitches definitely give as much room to play with, like color does. They make it all about showcasing the weave and offer the chance to create a drawing too, but from the crossing and dimension of stitches.

A messy bun hat was also in the queue to be designed, Winter is near. So, Treccia Messy Bun Hat is my newest pattern, to be worn comfortably, very in fashion with the fun, relaxed trends out there.

Several stitches are included in the pattern, for the 3D effect. Back loop single crochet, front loop double crochet and front post double crochet are combined to create that nice surface. An intermediate skill level project, that I’m sure will be easy for you to follow if you already have crochet notions. And simple construction, involving only two pieces and practically one small seam.

SPECIAL STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES

Back loop single crochet: Single crochet, made in back loop of stitches from last row/round. Insert the hook in bl of next st, yarn over, pull through the st, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

Front loop double crochet: Double crochet, made in front loop of stitches from indicated round. Insert the hook in fl of st, yarn over, pull through the st, (yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook) twice.

Front post double crochet: Double crochet, wrapping st from last round from the front, to create a textured stitch. Yarn over, insert the hook, front to back of next dc from last round, yarn over, pull through the back of the st, (yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook) twice.

Front post double crochet decrease: Two front post double crochets closed together, to decrease one stitch. (Yarn over, insert the hook, front to back of next dc from last round, yarn over, pull through the back of the st, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook) twice, yarn over, pull through three loops on the hook.

Back loop single crochet decrease: Two back loop single crochets closed together, to decrease one stitch. (Insert the hook in bl of next st, yarn over, pull through the st) twice, yarn over and pull through three loops on the hook.

If you’ve never made crochet cables, maybe you want to try with an easier pattern first. My Cabled Cape free pattern with video tutorial, can give you that confidence, to understand some of the basic stitches used for texture (front post and back post double crochets) and the logic behind crossing them, to shape the braiding.

Treccia Messy Bun Hat is made with only 100 gr. of yarn so, even though it comes with a variety of stitches, it’s quite a fast project. My video tutorial covers all steps, from making the super easy ribbing, to shaping the body of the hat. Going slowly through every stitch included, for you to have an enjoyable crochet time.

Written instructions and more images of the process are included below, in this same post, to check every detail on the way.

If you want the formatted, ad free, 9 page PDF document (with written instructions and more than 60 images in photo tutorials) of Treccia Messy Bun Hat, this is available in my pattern stores (Ravelry, Etsy, Lovecrochet) for USD $2.50.

Made the hat with bulky weight wool yarn, for a beautiful elastic and warm feel. And only basic additional supplies like a stitch marker, tapestry needle, measuring tape and scissors. Because not much finishing is required, only closing a small seam for the brim by the end.
