Wuf-Wuf Barry free CAL, PART 1

FREE PATTERN WITH PHOTO TUTORIAL

After I finished making Hop-Hop Charlie design, I felt it would be a shame not to make him a friend. It would also be a nice chance to keep practicing Intarsia Crochet. That’s how I came up with Wuf-Wuf Barry, which is based in the same shape of the bunny, with changes in the outfit, color scheme and a few body parts. Oh, and this cute dog includes Tapestry Crochet (my favorite color work technique) for the head.

If you’re not familiar with what a free CAL (Crochet Along) is, or haven’t seen my last, I suggest you have a look to be more familiar with this dynamic.

This CAL will consist of 4 parts too, but will only include 2 video tutorials. Also, PART 1 and PART 4 will link you to PART 1, 2 and 4 of Hop-Hop Charlie, because directions are practically the same for some body parts (with color changes only) and finishing.

PART 1. Dog: Legs, Body and Arms (released today, January 21, 2019)
PART 2. Dog: Head and Ears (to be released January 28, 2019)
PART 3. Bone Vest: Front and Back (to be released February 4, 2019)
PART 4. Finishing (to be released February 11, 2019)

If you want the anticipated, finished version of this free CAL, which is a formatted, ad free 11 page PDF document (with photo tutorials), this is already available in my pattern stores (Ravelry, Etsy, Lovecrochet) for USD $2.50. This will allow you to complete the design, without waiting for the other parts of the free CAL to be revealed. Just note that instructions (with videos) will be released as the free CAL moves along.

Make sure to subscribe to my mailing list, or follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Youtube, for you to be notified as soon as a new part of this CAL is published. I will also love to see your makings so, feel free to use #wufwufbarry on your IG or FB posts, for me to see your progress.

Each part will be published in a blog post, with written instructions and link to its video tutorial (when there is one). So today, you will find the written instructions for PART 1 below. Main parts of the dog (legs, body and arms) have the same structure as Hop-Hop Charlie (which you can see in detail in video tutorial for PART 1 of the bunny), there are only a few changes in color, which are specified in written instructions for the dog below.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES
For this part of Wuf-Wuf Barry CAL, we’ll be using crochet basic stitches, such as single crochet, half double crochet, slip stitch, easy increases and decreases. We’ll also be crocheting in the round and making a few color changes for the legs. Skill level for the complete pattern is rated as intermediate, because Tapestry Crochet and Intarsia Crochet techniques are involved in PART 2 and 3 of the project, but we’ll be going easy for part 1 first.

I’ve also included a photo tutorial on how to change colors in legs and arms, if you want to make it more subtle. This will be useful for when you want to change from any color block to other when working with single crochet, in the round, in a spiral.

Change color by the end of the round, to start the next with new color.

Remove marker from first stitch, insert hook in the back loop of the stitch and make a slip stitch.

Then, make one single crochet in the same stitch, relocate marker.

Continue with the new color, making regular single crochets, just before the slip stitch.

Remove the marker and insert the hook in the first single crochet of the round (skipping the slip stitch), to make the first single crochet of the next round regularly, in a spiral way. Place the marker again and continue with the following single crochets of the round.
This creates a more subtle color change, when switching from one block to the other.
